Using coupons is a rush. Saving all that money gets us all jacked up and overly excited. Sometimes, we even get so excited we forget some of our coupon manners. There are some things we can do to go the extra mile to show our best behavior.
When you are scoring a hot deal, like canned goods for less than $.25 each, that voice often says, “Get as many as you can!” Stockpiling is part of the long term savings program and how true coupon users save the most. Yet wiping out the shelves is perceived as rude to neighboring customers. In order to avoid looking like a new contestant on America’s Biggest Hoarder, only take 12 cans. A dozen is plenty off the shelf. Then ask the employee in that aisle if they can get you additional items from the back storage room. If that isn’t available make two trips. It may seem like a lot of extra effort but if the sale price is a good one, other customers tend to get upset with the coupon users, not the store. If you need more than two dozen of something, it’s best to talk to a manager about ordering special.
Be prepared for your check out experience. The dreaded long line and shaking heads is a fear for all coupon users. After you have all your items on the belt. Start organizing your coupons. I line my coupons up, all with the barcodes facing up and in the same direction. When I hand my coupons to Debbie, she doesn’t have to try to figure out where the codes are on each coupon or line them up.
Only take the coupons from the bins or on the shelves that you plan to use. We all want the coupons! If your family will use 6 boxes of Toaster Strudel, take 3 -$1 on 2 coupons for the order. Wiping them out causes a coupon shortage. We all shop the same stores, and need to help out a fellow coupon shopper.
Lend a coupon. I’ve done this hundreds of times. If you’re picking up bag of cheese, and have an extra coupon, share with the stranger who is picking up a bag the same time. You would think you gave them a $100 bill! They are pleased to be introduced to savings in this manner. Likewise, I’ve handed “Up” coupons while waiting in line. Let’s face it, there is nothing to do but watch the customer up the line checking out. I’ve shared up to $10 to a stranger. She is now part of our weekly trading group.
These things will build a more positive reaction in the store for coupon users. The more coupon users that frequent YOUR store, the more the savings will appear for you.
