It Tastes Like Chicken
Mar 16, 2017
My middle child did not eat meat the first three years of his life. We slowly eased him in with chicken. He liked chicken. Then we did pork, and told him it was chicken. He liked it. We tried the chicken trick with beef – that is pretty much where he drew the line. So if it resembles chicken in any way he will usually try it. This also goes for anything fried as it could maybe be a chicken nugget.
As fish is plentiful this time of year I thought catfish might also be “the other white meat” that the kids could enjoy. Did I attempt to cook the fish? I’m going to keep it honest with this blog – no, I did not. What I did do, and I think is an affordable and easy option, is the catfish dinner special at County Market. It is $6.99 and has two HUGE catfish fillets (or a whole catfish), two sides and a roll. It easily feeds two people or one adult and a few small children on the fence.
As a back-up, I picked up County Market’s Take ‘n Bake cheese pizza, which I also grabbed in the deli. I was in and out of the store in five minutes. Depending on the size of your family and their love of fish, you could get a couple catfish dinners and a pizza. The dinners are available on Fridays through Lent – so this is a good end of the week option (cod dinners are available after Lent).
I am not one to eat fish often, but this was really good. I had several taste testers waiting at home as my daughter was home on spring break, and her boyfriend said, “I don’t usually like catfish, but this is good. It does not taste fishy.”
I would agree with him. The kids also tried it. I know foodies would gasp at this suggestion, but cut the fillet into squares and provide ketchup. The kids will go into autopilot dipping mode.
Growing up going to Catholic school I had my fair share of burnt cafeteria fish sticks. As an adult I need to remind myself that there is more to fish. So while fish dinners are easily accessible I am giving it another try and I hope you do too.
AND from my family to yours, have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day! (I do have more than one child, but only one child that loves the camera).
